Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Azure, a winged horse at speed Argent bridled Tenn.  Attached below the shield a Blue scroll doubled and inscribed "GRAVISSIMA LEVANS" in Silver.

Symbolism
Ultramarine blue and golden orange are the colors associated with Aviation units.  Blue represents the sky, the unit's area of operations.  The horse is a symbol of strength and swiftness; the wings refer to the basic mission of the unit.  The horse also alludes to military preparedness and suggests the heavy lift capabilities of the unit.  The motto translates to "Lifting The Heaviest Things."

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 7 July 1989.
